From a young age, Jodi could draw very well. As soon as her parents recognized her innate talent they immediately enrolled her in after school art classes. She quickly excelled in charcoal, pastels, pencil, pen & ink, colored ink, and finally oil painting. Jodi had an uncanny ability to recreate the work of the masters with ease. Though Jodi had an immediate eye for replicating the classics, she preferred experimental expressionism and the avant-garde. At home, she occupied herself with anything she could find in her Dad’s garage hammer, nails, handsaw, a pile of wood anything that could quench her intense desire to "make things." She even claims to have invented MTV in the 4th grade (she says no one believes her).
Years later, Jodi still felt impassioned about "making things" and at the University of Michigan School of Art & Design (UM), her artistic spirit soared. Experimenting with multiple mediums, combining words and images, Jodi reached the level of artistic expression she craved. While at UM under the tutelage of renowned photograher Joanne Leonard, Jodi was awarded an Achievement Award in Photography.
Jodi still carries the same fire in her graphic design, photography and web development studio. She has been working at fever pitch since she opened her studio doors in 1993. After working with Jodi clients refuse to take their work elsewhere. While she describes herself as "messy and panic-driven," her clients describe her as "dependable, reliable, extremely creative, professional, and fun to work with." When asked to describe Jodi another client exalted without hesitation "Jodi is simply, the best." One thing is for sure, Jodi Hersh exemplifies her favorite Erica Jong quote "Everyone has talent. What is rare is the courage to follow the talent to the dark place where it leads." She has taken her childhood urge to "make things" and followed that talent with courage. The result is an award-winning design, photography and web development studio that is "growing, and growing, and growing."
Something about exhibitions and festivals here...
After spending time with Jodi, it’s not difficult to understand why her business has had such dynamic success. Jodi is humble, quick-witted, inventive, curious, detail-oriented, and gracious. The only draw back to Jodi is, as one client says, "you can’t clone her." Maybe someday science will recognize the demand for more graphic designers like Jodi Hersh. Until then the prototype will do just fine. And, by the way she really did invent MTV.
